As you all may know, I adore books and they are certainly a passion of mine. There is nothing more exciting than digging into a new read and enjoying something that helps you escape the stress of every day.
Yet, as a book lover and writer, I admit a lot of books arrive at my doorstep. Not only that, but I am a leader of a book club in Hollywood, Florida, so my love of books is something that I cannot deny, especially during those meetings where I catch up about books with my bookish friends.
With that said, I have had a lot of friends ask me how I decide what to read next. Below are my top three tips to keeping yourself sane when your “to be read” pile keeps getting bigger and bigger and your wish to catch up with your Goodreads challenge seems like a distant goal.
GO WITH YOUR GUT FEELING: Craving a fantasy or a contemporary next? Make sure you listen to that gut feeling that dictates your mood and pick a book that will keep you turning pages and won’t be set aside when you feel like you simply can’t finish it. For me, I stack books on my nightstand that I know I would love to read next and mix the genres up so I grab what I am most in the mood for.
CREATE A “TBR” JAR: A good friend of mine recommended it, and it’s such a great idea! Grab some slips of paper, write book names down, fold them up and throw them in a jar. When it’s time to pick your next read, grab a mystery slip of paper. Whatever you pick should be your next read!
READ BY AUTHORS: Got a favorite author whose books you want to keep reading? Has a friend been suggesting a specific author? Read by author and you will totally kick those books right off your TBR pile…John Green, Veronic Roth, you name it there’s tons of books by amazing authors that come in a series or even have the same genre…it’s a great way to catch up with a writer’s work and find your next favorite.
So, what are some ways that you recommend catching up with that big pile of books sitting on your nightstand? What books do you look forward to reading next? Let us know at @DirtyandThirty and at me at @AuroraMiami and stay tuned for more “Girl Power Book Club” posts! Happy Reading!
