The Memory of Water by Shelagh Stephenson opens January 9th 2015 at the Promenade Playhouse at 1404 3rd Street Promenade, Santa Monica, 90401.

The Promenade Players Theatre Company will present The Memory of Water, a witty and moving exploration of family dynamics, by British playwright Shelagh Stephenson.               Winner of the “Laurence Olivier Award for Best Comedy,” this absorbingly entertaining play, full of dark humor and heart, features three sisters – paranoid Mary, uptight Teresa, and strung out and bratty Catherine – have returned home on the eve of their mother’s funeral after her battle with Alzheimer’s, setting the stage for hilarious sibling jealousies, witty bickering, and doped-up soul searching.

Making her appearance as well is the ghost of their mother. Each sister holds distinct memories of their childhood, each has her own unique perspective on what these memories mean. A hit in London’s West End, The Memory of Water vividly brings home all the joys and sorrows of family relationships.

Partnering up with Alzheimer’s Association, as the play touches on this disease there will be guest speakers on Fridays and Sunday performances. A short Q & A session will provide information about the disease that is the 6th leading cause of death, every 67 seconds someone in the United States develops this disease and it kills more Americans than breast and prostate cancer combined. First presented in London in 1998, where it received unqualified rave reviews and an extended run in London’s West End, The Memory of Water has been hailed as “barbed, lyrical, witty and full of a rare emotional intelligence”, and “wickedly funny and moving.” The play was adapted by Stephenson for the 2002 film, Before You Go, directed by Lewis Gilbert, starring, Julie Walters, John Hannah, and Joanne Whalley.
