Not in a creepy stalker kind of a way, but more in a “you changed my life” kind of way, if you know what I mean.
I’ll never forget the first time I saw you – it was a few years back when I was a fledgling stand-up comic and I was scared shitless. At the time I was in the midst of attempting to write material for my very first show at The Improv – I was right in the middle of wondering if a bottle of wine could cure writer’s block while simultaneously crying, “Nobody thinks I’m funny” when suddenly I noticed a teaser on Comedy Central advertising an upcoming block of female stand-up specials. Obviously this was divine intervention. So I procrastinated for the next few hours by opening that bottle of wine and watching the entire marathon.
Most of the comics were good, a few were great, but only one was truly inspiring – and that comic was you, Amy Schumer.
I loved everything about that special from the material, to the delivery, to the impeccable timing – I rewatched that special so many times that I can honestly say that for once I actually felt like I got my money’s worth on my overpriced Time Warner Cable bill.
Amy, you inspired me to be better. When I was having a hard time working out new stand up material, I’d often find myself saying “WWAD” – What Would Amy Do.
Eventually I left that 1-bedroom apartment in Hancock Park, and had to split ways with DVR and Time Warner Cable, but even though I had to say goodbye to my borderline obsession with your Comedy Central half hour, I’ve been so happy to see you flourish on other platforms as well.
Every time I see you in magazines, in the trades, or on TV – whether it’s“Girls” or “Inside Amy Schumer” I always have the same feeling of happiness for your successes. Each and every one of them is more than well deserved, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for you!
Thank you for being an inspiration to me, and to many other funny ladies out there who think what you’re doing is awesome. Keep doing your thang, girl!
